In Chennai, India, did you swim in the Bay of Bengal? Did you eat Upma from a copper pot, topped with onions and peanuts, alongside masala vada dipped in coconut chutney? These are a few of my favorite memories from Chennai, the heart of South India, where the friendly culture is warm and inviting.
Not many years ago, we Americans would not have been permitted to stay at the Taj Connemara Hotel in Chennai. Only the British! But just a few years ago, the guest list was opened to all people of the world. We are happy that we could enjoy this historic hotel, with its winding hallways and courtyard rooms.
We certainly enjoyed relaxing in the beautiful hotel, but we also walked the streets and visited the Universities. As we wandered, two sights reminded us to be kind to the environment.
We also watched the students and families at play. In fact, we were invited to a wedding at the hotel. Later, while walking near the city square, we were asked to join a family’s photo session!
The last couple of days, we spent on the road with our excellent driver, taking in the sites of the farmland on the road to Pondicherry.
